Position Overview

The Director of Development is responsible for creating and implementing the strategy for marketing, fundraising, and special events. The Director of Development reports to the Executive Director and works closely with other staff and the Board of Directors for the organization.

 

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • 4-6 years successful experience in fundraising
  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of leadership and major gift donors in order to develop relationships between them and CIS
  • Ability to manage people, processes, deadlines and budgets
  • Ability to get along with peers, subordinates and management and maintain a positive and constructive attitude while solving problems
  • Ability to protect the mission, goals and values of CIS
  • Must be a highly energetic professional with a track record of building donor relationships and closing gifts
  • Successful experience in qualifying prospects and developing cultivation and solicitation strategies
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated record of self-motivation
  • Exceptional project management skills, including designing, implementing, and managing fundraising campaigns and programs
  • Solid understanding of development operation fundamentals and how to improve and enhance systems
  • Proven track record engaging the Board of Directors in fundraising efforts
  • Benchmarking and fundraising analysis expertise
  • Experience developing a budget, tracking, and measuring results
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and fundraising/constituent management software.
  • Superior written and verbal communication

Role and Responsibilities

  • Fundraising and Marketing
    • Create and manage the strategy for fundraising, marketing, and public relations
    • Manage the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of all individual, foundation, and corporate donors and prospects through appeals, grant proposals, events, in-person asks, planned giving, and other vehicles
    • Lead creation and oversight of all strategies and activities for donor cultivation, solicitation, and relations
    • Create and grow planned giving and major gifts programs through the identification and regular cultivation of targeted individual prospects
    • Closely track cultivation efforts for all prospects, including utilizing a “moves management” system.
    • Develop a strategy and implement all activities for the annual giving program.
  • Relations with the Board of Directors
    • Work with the External Affairs Committee of the Board of Directors and the Executive Director to develop strategies to initiate and meet aggressive fundraising goals
    • Develop fundraising training for Board members and other leadership volunteers as appropriate
    • Assume responsibility for all Development reports to the Board and attend all Board meetings
    • Assist the Board with recommending and researching potential new members
  • Development Office Infrastructure
    • Participate actively with the Executive Director to develop and execute strategic goals for the department and the organization
    • Develop and manage budgets, metrics and goals
    • Refine office systems to support all Development projects and operations as appropriate
    • Supervise donor and gift record-keeping
    • Coordinate development research activities
    • Oversee the management of databases and all records, files, and gift processing
    • Manage the pledge reminder and acknowledgement process
