Donor Relations Manager (Major Gifts)

Job Summary:
Highly energetic and positive professional with a track record of building donor relationships and closing gifts in the five-figure range in team environment under the Chief Development Officer.  Will adhere to the highest ethical standards, demonstrate empathetic disposition and perseverance, and respect for neighbors in need whom we serve.

The incumbent should demonstrate passion for social services, have a proven record of soliciting and securing major gifts, provide outstanding customer service, see fundraising a collaborative rather than competitive environment, and be able to build relationships with internal and external customers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Solicit gifts of $5K and higher from individual donors and prospects.
  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 200 active prospective donors.
  • Achieve annual fundraising and activity goals: 100 high-value personal interactions, 70 solicitations with an expectation of closing 55 of the asks resulting in $500,000 in commitments
  • Participate in all aspects of the gift cycle:
    • Gather data, research and qualify prospects
    • Initiate contacts with potential leadership and major gift donors
    • Develop appropriate cultivation strategies, including working with volunteers
    • Move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure
    • Make solicitations when appropriate
    • Maintain stewardship contacts with donors
  • Offer prospect strategy counsel to the executive team, development staff and others who are managing prospects.
  • Work collaboratively with and in support of volunteers, development staff, executive team and other Food Bank representatives to cultivate and solicit donors for Food Bank priorities.
  • Monitor all prospect contacts to ensure positive and purposeful prospect and donor relations.



  • Experience in a major / planned gift environment, evidence of successfully building a portfolio through cold calls, evidence of major gifts closed from cold call activity, and must have experience with stewardship techniques.  
  • Track record of successful experience in major ($5K or above) or planned gift fundraising.
  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of leadership and major gift donors in order to develop relationships between them and the Food Bank.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills both in person and by phone, with high professionalism.
  • Successful experience in making cold calls as well as developing cultivation and solicitation strategies.
  • Ability to complete assignments and achieve goals with little supervision.
  • Fantastic customer service ethic and high expectations for quality.
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing, proof reading skills, and speaking.
  • Bachelor’s degree, masters preferred; significant work experience can substitute for the degree.
  • Proficient using the latest versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and mail merges, donor database systems; email and web searches.
  • Valid driver’s license.
